Ordeal of Fire is the fifth episode of the Hero Factory television series. The episode aired on April 10, 2011 on Nicktoons and was written by Sean Catherine Derek and directed by Howard E. Baker. It was included as a bonus feature on the Savage Planet DVD release in October 2011.

Synopsis

A mining station and refueling depot in Sector 51 falls under attack from a gang of villains called the Fire Villains, which consist of the Fire Lord, Drilldozer, Nitroblast, and Jetbug. One of the workers send an alert to Hero Factory.

At the Hero Factory, Mr. Makuro is giving his annual keynote address to an assembly of Heroes and reporters, including Daniela Capricorn. He introduces two new Heroes, Julius Nex and Nathan Evo, and explains the new upgrade process. He announces that in two to three months, when the process is safe, all Heroes will undergo an upgrade. Although the press expresses doubt at the schedule, Mr. Makuro assures them that the current Heroes are still effective at their jobs.

Meanwhile, Preston Stormer, William Furno, Natalie Breez, and Mark Surge have arrived at the station and are fighting against the attackers. Stormer sends Furno on reconnaissance. William discovers that the villains are drawing power from the fuel. Surge attempts to join Furno, but the team is surprised by Drilldozer emerging from below. Stormer tries to melee attack Drilldozer, but Drilldozer quickly dodges his attacks, surprising Stormer with his increased speed. Drilldozer says that his speed is not the only thing that is augmented, and then knocks Stormer down to the floor. The three Heroes fire on Drilldozer, but their attacks have no effect. The Heroes try to fall back, but Drilldozer uses his blade weapon to shoot an energy blast to attack the Heroes.

Meanwhile, Mr. Makuro uses Floater Enforcer Drones to have Nex and Evo demonstrate their fighting skills to the press. The Heroes destroy the drones while Mr. Makuro explains the Heroes' fighting skills. Makuro assures that the 2.0 Heroes will use their upgrades to do the Heroes' tasks better.

The heroes and civilians surrounded

Breez gets the workers into the Heroes' Hero Craft while Stormer and Surge distract Fire Lord. Surge tries to use his Long-Distance Thermo-Scope to study the villains, but the villains are too hot for him, and he cannot get a lock. Surge feels useless in the refueling station, but Stormer dissuades him from thinking this. The villains spot Furno and Jetbug shoots him off of his perch. Fire Lord confronts Stormer and tells him they last met on Tallos 5, though Stormer does not recognize him. Furno fires at the villain, but Fire Lord simply absorbs the energy. Stormer discovers that he cannot contact Hero Factory from the station, so he orders the team to retreat and they, along with the remaining workers, head for the Hero Craft. The villains surround them, cutting off their escape. Surge breaks away and starts destroying fuel cells. The villains go after him, leaving the others free to escape. Furno is reluctant to leave his friend, but Stormer orders him to board the craft. The Heroes depart with the workers while Furno worries about Surge. Stormer promises him that the Heroes to return for Surge.

At the Hero Factory, after Stormer, Furno, and Breez return to the Hero Factory, Stormer demands the upgrade from Mr. Makuro. The founder insists that the process is not yet safe enough for them to receive and he needs to work some kinks in the upgrade. When Stormer suggests simply recharging their Hero Cores, Zib points out that even if they go back to the refueling station fully charged, they will be unable to defeat Fire Lord and his gang, who would destroy them. Mr. Makuro, inspired by Stormer’s determination, relents and tells Zib to prepare the Assembly Tower for the upgrade. Zib tells the Heroes that they need time for the upgrades to get ready, but Breez does not think they will have time, but Stormer assures her that they will manage. While Zib and Quadal are calibrating the Assembly Tower for the upgrade, Zib warns Quadal to be careful with the progress and worries about Makuro coming soon to check on it, but Makuro shows up and tells Zib to have time to get ready with the progress. Breez is upgraded first, followed by Furno, and then Stormer.

Virtual Training

In the Hero Factory Virtual Training Site, the three Heroes adjust to their new forms while practicing fighting Floating Enforcer Drones in a holographic version of Penitentiary 1331 from Tantalus 5. Zib, Quadal, and several workers are training the Heroes, with Zib leading the program. The Heroes still feel awkward and are unused to the new features while the Heroes defeat the drones, with Zib feeling disappointed. When Mr. Makuro asks the Heroes how are they doing, the Heroes say that they are fine and will have Zib and Quadal monitor them for any growing pains, leaving Mr. Makuro convinced to let them go back to fight the villains.

The Heroes use their Drop Ship to return to the refueling station. After they arrive there, the Heroes travel the station. Stormer tells Furno to do reconnaissance. Furno uses his goggles' night vision to find anything in the station. He finds Nitroblast. Stormer tells his fellow Heroes to be stealthy and surprise attack Nitroblast. Though initially undetected by the villains, Furno accidentally fires his new weapon, getting Nitroblast's attention. Nitroblast comes to Fire Lord and Drilldozer, alerting them to the Heroes' presence. The Heroes attack, with Stormer taking on Fire Lord and Furno and Breez going after Drilldozer and Nitroblast. As they fight, Fire Lord explains to Stormer his ability to siphon power from fuel. Furno receives a distress beacon from a communication device to “get down”, and he and Breez are knocked back by a blast from a ship outside the station, which flies away afterwards. This causes the two's weapons to become interlocked, making Furno and Breez stuck together. Furno requests reinforcements from Zib as Drilldozer bores up from the ground. Zib says that he has the reinforcements coming to the Heroes' location, though he worriedly hopes that the reinforcements will get there in time.

Stormer offers to aid Fire Lord in his addiction to the power he gets from fuel, but the villain rejects his offer, holding him over the edge of the station. Drilldozer attacks Furno and Breez, but a large Hero Pod falling from the sky distracts him. The Fire Lord is also caught off guard, giving Stormer time to get free of his grip. Furno and Breez, still stuck to each other, fend off Drilldozer. The Hero Pod lands, and Nex and Evo emerge from it. Evo meditates and then attacks the three present villains while Nex untangles Furno and Breez. The three join Evo and Stormer in battling the villains.

Breez subdues Drilldozer by hitting his weak spot, and then Hero-Cuffs him. Furno hits Nitroblast's weak spot and knocks him off-balance. Nitroblast almost falls from the refueling station when Nex saves him, and then Evo Hero-Cuffs Nitroblast. Fearful of losing his source of power, Fire Lord races inside the station and the Heroes follow him. He absorbs more from a large stack of fuel cells, ignoring Stormer's warning. The Heroes fire upon him, but the power-hungry leader absorbs the attacks, knocking all of them but Stormer down with his own. A ship (the same one that blasted a hole in the wall previously) ejects Jetbug and knocks Fire Lord away from the fuel cells, ripping his absorbing hand out. Fire Lord becomes weak from the hit, so Stormer subdues by hitting his weak spot and then Hero-Cuffs him. During the time, Surge emerges from the ship. Stormer, Furno, and Breez are shocked to see Surge alive, and Surge is surprised and impressed to see his friends getting the upgrade. He explains how he outsmarted Jetbug, took control of the criminal's craft, and gave Furno and Breez the distress beacon. Stormer commends Surge for acting like a hero, even in capivity. Surge excitedly asks his friends when will he get the upgrade.

The team returns to Hero Factory, where Surge is upgraded. Fire Lord is escorted in by Nex and Evo, vowing revenge to the Heroes. Stormer reports Fire Lord will be helped along with his henchmen to repair the damage the excessive power absorption has done to them.

Surge at the ceremony honoring him

Surge is commended for his actions in a special ceremony. Breez gives him his Ice Spear Blaster, and Surge uses it to make fireworks to celebrate. Capricorn reports that with 2.0 upgrades being given to all heroes, the Hero Factory has entered a new era.

Trivia

  • Though Comic 5: Ordeal of Fire, released in March 2011 while the episode was released on April, is based on the script for the episode, the plot of the comic diverges from the episode, with Surge retreating along with the others and receiving an upgrade with them rather than getting captured by Fire Lord and his henchmen. The reason why Surge did not get the upgrade before the villains' defeat in the episode is unknown. The comic is non-canon, and the episode is the only one that has a non-canon comic based on its script. The comic also does not have an ending, and it is unknown why. It is perhaps to avoid spoilers from the episode.
  • In the episode, Jimi Stringer, Dunkan Bulk, and Thresher are amongst the crowd who were attending Makuro's presentation and then seeing Surge shooting fireworks. Stringer and Bulk never spoke this time.
  • In the episode, there is a Hero that looks like Von Ness in the crowd. However, his animation model is just reused, as Von Ness became a villain called Von Nebula and got imprisoned in the Black Hole Orb Staff in Episode 4: Von Nebula. Thus, the Hero's Von Ness-like look is non-canon.
  • In a trailer for the episode,(see the second trailer in this page) there is a scene not shown in the episode. The scene is where the 2.0 Heroes were shown inside their Drop Ship. It is unknown why this scene was not shown in the episode.
  • Strangely, this episode is not featured in Lego's YouTube Channel or iTunes.
