The Black Hole Orb Staff, or simply Black Hole Staff, was the weapon used by the super-villain Von Nebula. When Von Nebula was defeated and absorbed into the staff by Preston Stormer, it was confiscated and placed under heavy guard. However, it was later triggered by Voltix, who used it to incite a mass breakout. When it happened, Voltix destroyed the orb part of the staff in order to start the event, rendering it powerless.

History

The Black Hole Orb Staff's origin is unknown, but Von Nebula probably created it.

Von Nebula used the staff to make a portal that could serve as a base of operations for himself. He planned to use the staff to absorb energy from Akiyama Makuro's Quaza to enhance his black hole ten thousand times. Von Nebula used the staff's orb part to see a recent fight between two of his henchmen and three Alpha 1 Team Heroes in New Stellac City. He teleported his base to the battle. He used the base's gravitational pull to strip away Preston Stormer, Jimi Stringer, Dunkan Bulk, William Furno, Mark Surge, and Natalie Breez's equipment, making them vulnerable to Von Nebula and four members of his gang, Thunder, Corroder, XPlode, and Meltdown. However, Von Nebula did not know that the Heroes had Particle Separators and Anti-Gravity Thruster Rings, so he did not take these gadgets away. Stormer and Furno jumped into the portal to confront Von Nebula while the other Heroes went to fight his thugs. Stormer and Furno were stuck inside the black hole while Von Nebula threatened to drain their Hero Cores. The black hole's vortex was pulling the two Heroes in, but the Heroes resisted. Stormer and Furno removed their Rings from their boots, and then Furno held and hid them behind his back. The Heroes tricked Von Nebula into thinking that Stormer had the rings, so Von Nebula attacked Stormer, and Furno threw the rings to the vortex, disrupting it. Stormer made Von Nebula let go of the staff and then used it to suck him into its orb part, despite Von Nebula warning that the staff could be used to destory all three of them. The portal started to collapse, creating a wave of deadly, superheated explosion, and the two Heroes got out of the portal before the explosion could destroy them. After Stormer and Furno escaped, the portal fully exploded into nothingness.[Episode 4][C4] Stormer witnessed a robotic fly getting near the orb part, causing the orb part to suck the fly into it as well.[C4] The Heroes put the staff into an isolation cell in the Hero Factory building. A robotic fly in the cell got near the staff and then got sucked into the orb part as well.[Episode 4]

Much later, the Black Phantom made a plan that involves causing the Breakout. He wanted the staff to be placed in the Hero Factory's Villain Storage in order to start the plan, and then it somehow happened. Voltix tricked Furno and Daniel Rocka into capturing him, so when the two Heroes brought him to a cell in the Villain Storage, he used his electric powers to create an electric entity that looked like Von Nebula. The entity went to the staff and touched its orb part, destroying it and creating a small invisible bolt of energy that broke through the Hero Factory's ceiling. The the bolt turned into a portal, and then shot a pillar-like energy beam that disabled the Villain Storage's locking system, freeing all of the villains from the room's cells. Voltix told all of the villains to use the portal to escape. The villains used the tunnel to get inside the the portal to use it to go to their desired locations. After all of the villains escaped, the portal disappeared. Since the orb part is destroyed, the staff became useless.

Rocka was ordered by the Hero Recon Team to investigate the staff, but when Black Phantom put the Hero Factory building lockdown, Rocka stopped to investigate this instead.[Episode 8][Episode 9]

Functionality

The staff had the ability to create black holes, which are actually portals with strong gravitational pulls that can teleport a person to a location that the staff's user desired to go. It could also cause the portals to disappear. When the staff is used to make the portals, it could spin its two blades around its orb part.(shown in Von Nebula's set description)

It could create a small invisible bolt of energy that can break into the Hero Factory's ceiling and then, after it tranformed into a small portal, it could project a hollow pillar-like energy beam with an electricified outside that was strong enough to destroy the Hero Factory's Storage Facility's locking mechanism in one shot. The energy beam could function like a tunnel when it could also gravitationally take someone to the portal to get to their desired destination if the passenger entered the ground part of the beam.[Episode 8]

The staff could somehow create a large portal that Von Nebula used as his base of operations. It could teleport the portal to the user's desired destination. The portal would appear in space or in a planet's sky. When the black hole appeared in the sky, it looked like a gray hurricane. The staff could control the inside of the portal and its gravity. The staff's user could create a gaseous projection through the black hole base. The user could also float inside the portal and go through the walls. It could gravitationally take objects into the portal. If anything would get near the portal, the portal would take it inside itself. When people would get inside the portal, they could get gravitationally attracted to its interior walls. Its vortex was very dangerous and could suck in anyone who got attracted to the walls if the people were not strong enough to grab onto the walls. Von Nebula could use the staff to drain energy from Quaza, even through the Heroes' Hero Cores, to enhance his black hole base. If Anti-Gravity Thruster Rings would be thrown into the vortex, the rings counteract its force, causing it to stop pulling the people, superheat, and slowly cause the portal to explode and disappear.[Episode 4][C4]

The staff's orb part could be used to view events in other locations, even inside the portal base. The Staff could be used to shoot electric blasts from the orb part at a target. It could also suck a target into its orb part. Any being that would touch the orb part would get sucked in as well, though Von Nebula was not sucked in when he touched it during his battle in New Stellac City. It is unknown what was inside the orb part.[Episode 4][C4]

When Voltix created an electric entity that looked like Von Nebula and then had the entity use the staff by touching its orb part, this destroyed the orb part, and Voltix was able to control the staff's powers for a moment until all of the villains in the Hero Factory's Storage Facility escaped. Since the orb part got destroyed, the staff is now powerless.[Episode 8]

Example Usage

The staff being utilized

In Episode 4: Von Nebula, Stormer used the staff to suck Von Nebula into it.

Set Information

Set 7145 Von Nebula, released in 2010, includes the Black Hole Orb Staff, consisting of 13 of the set's 156 pieces. The blades around the central orb are able to rotate.

Trivia

  • The staff is somewhat like a Kanohi Olmak, aka the Mask of Dimensional Gates, from Bionicle 2001-2010/Generation 1. Both can open portals.
