← Back to Sets § 2011

2011 was the second year of HERO FACTORY sets. It consisted of two waves. The winter wave is called "Ordeal of Fire", or "Hero Factory 2.0", and the summer wave is called "Savage Planet", or "Hero Factory 3.0".

History

The Ordeal of Fire wave introduced a new building system for Lego's action figure category called the "Character and Creature Building System", or "CCBC" for short. All sets that have hand also have five fingers per hands rather than four, like in the previous set year. The wave consists of ten sets. The backgrounds in the sets' front art take place in Tanker Station 22. Six of the sets are the Hero sets, which represent Hero Pods and six members of the Alpha 1 Team, who got the 2.0 Upgrade. The other four sets are box sets that represent a gang of villains called the Fire Villains. One of them is a Titan set, which depicts Fire Lord, and the others are medium-sized sets, which depict his henchmen, Drilldozer, Jetbug, and Nitroblast. Four are the returning Heroes, Preston Stormer, William Furno, Natalie Breez, and Mark Surge. The other two introduced two new members of the Alpha 1 Team, Julius Nex and Nathan Evo. All of the Hero sets can bend their limbs.

The Savage Planet wave consists of twelve sets. The backgrounds in the sets' front art take place in Quatros. Six of the sets are the Hero sets, which represent six members of the Alpha 1 Team in their 3.0 forms. Five of the Hero sets are the returning Heroes, Stormer, Furno, Nex, Jimi Stringer, and Dunkan Bulk. The other one introduced Daniel Rocka. The other six sets are box sets. The largest of them is a Titan, which is Witch Doctor, and that set is the largest Hero Factory set in general. Two smaller Titan sets, which are still larger than the Hero sets, are Scorpio and Rocka XL. The other boxed sets are medium-sized sets. The medium-sized sets and Scorpio depict techno-organic animals from Quatros that Witch Doctor is mind-controlling, Waspix, Raw-Jaw, and Fangz. Each of the animals has 1-3 corrupted Quaza spike pieces, and the Witch Doctor has four. Rocka XL represents Rocka 3.0's XL form, and is the first XL Hero set. Each of the Hero canister sets is based on an animal.

In April, the Hero Recon Team website was released. It allowed builders to design their own Heroes from a wide range of different Hero Factory elements online and purchase them through LEGO's Design byME service. An armor piece co-injected with black and silver plastic was exclusive to purchases within this service, though it has since been discontinued as of September 2011. The unique armor piece was designed to designate the hero's membership in the Hero Factory Recon Team.

Featured Elements

Like the previous set year, each of these following sets, the Fire Villains, Scorpio, Witch Doctor, and Rocka XL, comes with a variation of a gun called the Meteor Blaster, which are the same in construction as Bionicle's Thornax Launchers, but with different-colored spheres that are the same as Bionicle's Zamor Spheres. The gun is comprised of two pieces, which are spaced two studs apart and attached to the set by one or two axles. The gun is fired by squeezing the midsection. Each of the Fire Villains has a black variation of a Meteor Blaster called a Lava Sphere Shooter, which shoots a red and yellow sphere. Each of the summer wave large sets has a different variation of a Meteor Blaster.

The canister Hero sets are slightly taller than the 2010 sets' Hero figures. They have identical new chest armor, as opposed to the 2010 Hero figures, and each chest armor piece is connected to an under-armor torso piece on a Hero's torso. Each of the 2011 sets has a new Hero Core and head of the same color. Each of the canister Hero sets' new armor has one limb armor piece that has the Hero's name on it. The piece is located on either the Hero's upper arm, forearm, or thigh. Each of the sets has a unique weapon or pair of weapons. Each of the sets' canister's lib has a 13-digit code printed underneath it, which was used to unlock one of twelve portions of an online game called Creep Crushers from the HeroPad section of HeroFactory.com. This is based on the Hero set that the code is from. Each of the canisters' back tells you that you can combine two of the sets in one of the set waves to form a non-canon combination model, which looks like a larger Hero-like being with double-jointed legs, using building instructions from HeroFactory.com.

Each Hero 2.0 set has a unique silver or gunmetal gray headgear around the rims of their new identical helmets. Each of the sets has one white, silver, or gunmetal gray limb armor piece that has the Hero's name on it. Their canisters' lids are orange. Their codes could unlock the Hero 2.0 portions of Creep Crushers in early 2011.

Each Hero 3.0 canister set is based on a unique animal. He has a helmet that is based on his animal. Each of the sets has one transparent limb armor piece that has the Hero's name on it. There is also a picture of the Hero's animal on the armor piece. The canister sets' lids are lime green. Their codes could unlock the Hero 3.0 portions of a new version of Creep Crushers called Jungle Crushers in late 2011. Each of the canister sets also has a sticker sheet that promotes the Hero Recon Team, which depicts the Hero Recon Team. Rocka XL has Rocka 3.0's lion helmet and two more of Rocka 3.0's transparent green piece.

Each of the Fire Villains' helmet or head piece is the same as the other's helmet or head piece respectively, but reversed. Fire Lord's helmet is the same as Drilldozer's, but reversed. Jetbug's head piece is the same as Nitroblast's, but also reversed. Each of the Fire Villains also has the same T-shaped armor piece that is connected to their chest to act like the Fire Villains have their own "Hero Cores".

Each of the following summer 2011 sets, the Witch Doctor and the Quatros beasts, has an armor piece that connects its head to its neck.
