Villains are individuals who seek to rebel against the established law and commit crimes, either for personal gain or other ulterior motives.

History

The increasing presence of crime and villainy in the galaxy had happened for years.[SM2] This eventually led to the development of a countering force; this force, called the Hero Factory, was developed by business magnate Akiyama Makuro, with the primary focus on producing Heroes to stop villains. Usually, the Heroes fight robotic villains.

After the Heroes began quelling villain activity, a group of criminals banded together in order to stop the Hero Factory, becoming the Legion of Darkness. The leader of the Legion, Black Phantom, ultimately had different plans for the group, hoping that they and the Hero Factory would wipe each other out and leave him as a criminal superpower. Though they succeeded in temporarily shutting down the Hero Factory, the Legion was all ultimately captured and imprisoned on Asteroid J-54.[SM2] However, they escaped this prison, though the Legion was disbanded during the time[SM2, p. 136] and the Hero Factory built a more secure proprietary prison on-site at the Factory itself. The prisoners in Asteroid J-54 were transferred into the Hero Factory's new prison, where newly caught villains also began being held.[Episode 8]

Several rookie Heroes have defected from the Hero Factory, becoming villains. One such Hero, Von Ness, one of the first members of an elite Hero team called the Alpha 1 Team, became a villain called Von Nebula after fleeing during a crucial mission. He became an infamous crime lord and dedicated his pursuits to the destruction of Hero Factory. Another Hero, Core Hunter, eventually became a villain who steals Hero Cores from Heroes and killed some of them that way as a result, though the rest were given with replacement Hero Cores by other Heroes immeditately to survive. Core Hunter was imprisoned by the Hero Factory.[SM1]

Recently, Von Nebula was eventually stopped by a new incarnation of his former team, led by his old comrade Preston Stormer, and imprisoned in his own weapon, the Black Hole Orb Staff, which was put under heavy guard in a high security room in the Hero Factory.[Episode 4][C4]

Jailed villains

Hundreds of villains were imprisoned in the Hero Factory prison, and the Hero Factory corporation implanted implant micro-chips on the villains' heads during villain processing.[Episode 8][HiA] The villains later escaped in a mass breakout, initiated by former Legion of Darkness members, Black Phantom and Voltix. Voltix utilized Von Nebula's staff in the prison to create a massive black hole, disabling the prison security system and providing an escape route. All of the villains, including Voltix, got out of their cells and used the black hole to escape to many places in the galaxy. However, the Hero Factory used the micro-chips to locate the villains, and Nathaniel Zib sent the Heroes to go on a mission called Mission: Catch 'Em and Cuff 'Em, where the Heroes ahve to find and catch the villains individually.[Episode 8] The Heroes used a new kind of Hero Cuffs to recapture the villains. All of the villains were recaptured in the mission, and Black Phantom got arrested by the Heroes along the way.[Episode 9][SM4] However, he was able to send the Hero Factory schematics to an unknown ally or allies before Black Phantom got arrested, and the ally or allies are planning to use the schematics to make an evil version of the Hero Factory to wage war on the Hero Factory.[Episode 9][HiA][FO:MSG] Von Nebula's hand was shown opening a laptop containing the schematics, and he seems to be on the loose after the Breakout.[Episode 9]

An unknown villain directing the Brains

Some time after the breakout, an unknown villain amassed an army of Brains, and used them in an attempt to obliterate the Hero Factory. The brains reached the Makuhero Planet, where they mutated and possessed thousands of native creatures. The creatures formed an invading army, and launched an attack on Makuhero City, where they were ultimately rebuffed by the Heroes, who removed the brains controlling the creatures, though there is a small swarm of Brains hiding in a large pit, made by a Brain-possessed dragon called Dragon Bolt, in the Hero Factory building.[Episode 10] It is unknown what happened to this swarm when the Hero Factory was operating fine during Mission: Collision Course.[SM3]

An intergalactic group of villains called the Galactic Conspiracy built and used a space ship called the Valiant as a cover for their plan to use a super-weapon called Project Sunstorm in the city of Tranquis in planet Tranquis VII.[SM4] A swarm of Brains attacked the Valiant, but the Heroes defeated these Brains.[SM3] Another swarm of Brains attacked the city of Tranquis. During the attack, two members of the Galactic Conspiracy, Dumacc and Karter, were protecting Project Sunstorm from the Heroes while Dumacc did not know his employers' true nature until later on. The Brains encountered the Conspiracy members and then possessed Dumacc to try to use the weapon to defeat the Heroes, but the Heroes stopped the Brains. While they were cleaning up the mess in the city, Karter destroyed Project Sunstorm before he got arrested by them. The Heroes brought Karter to the Hero Factory's prison, but Karter planned to use this action to destroy the Hero Factory.[SM4] After a fellow member of the Conspiracy, Perjast indirectly helped Karter sabotage a power generator in the Hero Factory building, the Alpha 1 Team caught Perjast and then Karter. The conspiracy's leader killed Karter from afar. The leader is thinking about having the whole Galactic Conspiracy attacking the Hero Factory soon.[SM5]

There was no known villain activity when Mission: Invasion From Below happened. It is unknown if there are more Brains on the loose, and what happened to their maker when the mission happened since the Brains seem to have stopped attacking the Hero Factory. It is also unknown if the evil version of the Hero Factory is already made or not, and if the Galactic Conspiracy had taken action yet.

Abilities and Traits

Villains are noted for their refusal to accept the law, as well as a general disregard for the well-being of others. They like to escape from a Hero more than committing a crime.[HiA] Though they are capable of banding together to form a collective villain group, their selfish and immoral attitudes often lead to only temporary partnerships; villains are often seen abandoning members of their groups if it benefits them personally.

The reasons and motivations for being a villain vary widely; some succumb to negative emotions (such as when Von Ness fled a mission out of fear and cowardice) others are addicted to power (either physiologically, in the case of the Fire Villains or psychologically, in the case of Aldous Witch), while some have unknown causes and may have been manufactured in a way that promoted villainy. The criminal Meltdown was specifically manufactured as a villain, engineered using corrupted parts.

A scientist named Xera, a temporary ally of the Brains, was enthusiastic at the prospect of using their mind-suppressing powers to eliminate both heroism and villainy, citing the mass breakout as an example that the status quo was unhealthy to social order.[SM3]

The villains come in various shapes and sizes, though most known villains are humanoid and larger than a 1.0 Hero. Most of the known villains are robots.

Villains almost always come armed with weapons and gadgets, though some rely on natural tools; some also have certain powers and additional abilities.

The robot is taller than a 2.0 Hero, and has double-jointed limbs, a tail, bulky armor, seven blades, two Ice Cannons, a shield, and two spikes on the backs of its thigh armor. Makuro-X1 was intended to take on assignments too dangerous even for the Hero teams. However, something went wrong on its programming and it became determined to take over Hero Factory and and turn its Heroes into its slaves. Six 2.0 Heroes, Preston Stormer, William Furno, Natalie Breez, Julius Nex, Nathan Evo, and Mark Surge, went to fight Makuro-X1, but it is unknown what happened to Makuro-X1, for the Hero Factory is safe.[C6][Episode 6](questionable canonicity)

The mutated industrial robot
    • A mutated industrial robot that the Alpha 1 Team's newest rookie was fighting. At some point, an industrial robot was exposed to dangerous radiation that mutated him into this bestial form that looks like Jawblade. He became a dangerous threat to all Heroes and a sworn enemy to Black Phantom. He got captured by the Heroes at some point, and then he escaped during the Breakout. The rookie was sent to find, fight, and recapture this villain in probably the planet Scylla. The villain got recaptured, but it is unknown if the rookie did the recapturing. The robot's head looks like Jawblade's. He has clawed hands, two Magma Blades, and a bladed version of the Poison Plasma Gun on his back. He can stand upright and move on all fours.(questionable canonicity)
  • A villain or more that Black Phantom sent the Hero Factory schematics to[Episode 9]
  • A villain who Core Hunter had help from to get the first piece of the Doom Box from a planet's bank's vault in the Omega system. This villain disassembled Core Hunter, put him in a crate, and shipped him to the vault, so Core Hunter could get the Doom Box piece[SM1]
  • A gang of villains whose robbery got thwarted by Stormer, and that Stormer defeated and put in jail
    • A damaged robotic member of the gang who was in Geb's refueling station when Stormer was looking for Core Hunter there. This villain is about twice Stormer's 1.0 form's height with a badly damaged face and some exposed wiring on his left arm. He also has large hands. He was angry at Stormer for putting his whole gang in jail at first, but he disliked his own gang, anyway, so he calmly thanked Stormer[SM1]
  • A group of several small robotic mercenaries hired by Core Hunter to stall the Alpha 1 Team heroes who were after him. They were armed with laser blasters. They were defeated by Bulk and Stringer.[SM1]
  • A group of four robots that are programmed to detect movement and were armed with Energy Launchers. These robots were recruited by Core Hunter to have them guard him from the Alpha 1 Team in the freighter. The robots were defeated by Surge.[SM1]
  • A group of pirates who fought Bulk and Furno in space during Mission: Robot Rampage. Some of them piloted three old space ships that have standard weaponry that shoots lasers, but the ships also have powerful new high-tech engines that are so fast that the ship can catch up with a Drop Ship. The rest of the pirates piloted a large, fully armed space battle cruiser that was made before Hero Factory to help a planet defend itself. This ship is fully reconditioned, and the pirates used it as a major threat. The ship has plasma cannons, lasers, mass drivers that shoot mass-driver spheres, and an electromagnetic pulse emitter that can shoot a blast that can shut down anything mechanical for at least an hour. The ship is more powerful than a Drop Ship, but is not as maneuverable as it. Bulk and Furno got away from the pirates, and Stormer sent Daniel Rocka and Nathan Evo to take care of the pirates[SM4]

Set Information

Villains have been featured in every wave of Hero Factory, typically paired against a specific Hero in their promotional advertising. 2010 featured the villains of Von Nebula's Gang, all bearing weapons: sets 7147 XPlode, 7148 Meltdown, 7156 Corroder, and 7157 Thunder as normal boxed sets, as well as sets 7145 Von Nebula and 7162 Rotor as large box sets; set 7179 Bulk & Vapour, a special edition large box set, features Vapor with Hero Bulk. All of the villains except Von Nebula himself also have Meteor Blasters. Parts from XPlode and Corrdoer could be combined to make a non-canon creature called "Crunchy" from the Prototype Photography Tips section of HeroFactory.com's Gallery page, though there are no building instructions on the combination model.

The first half of 2011 featured four villains, the Fire Villains: sets 2192 Drilldozer, 2193 Jetbug, and 2194 Nitroblast as normal box sets, with set 2235 Fire Lord as a large box set. Each of these sets bear a Lava Sphere Shooter, which is a recolored version of the Meteor Blaster. Makuro-X1 is a combination model of parts from all six 2.0 Hero sets. The second half of 2011 only had one designated villain, large box set 2283 Witch Doctor, though there were several Beasts functioning as mind-controlled adversaries: box sets 2231 Waspix, 2232 Raw-Jaw, and 2233 Fangz, and large box set 2236 Scorpio.

2012, which contained a single banner year split into two waves (unlike the previous years), had nine lone villains, eight of whom would later be identified as members of the Legion of Darkness; the year also switched the method of packaging to resealable bags. Small bagged sets included 6201 TOXIC REAPA, 6216 JAWBLADE, and 6228 THORNRAXX in the first wave, and 6229 XT4 in the second wave; larger bagged sets included 6218 SPLITFACE in the first wave, and 6222 CORE HUNTER and 6283 VOLTIX in the second wave. Large villains still came packaged in boxes, with 6203 BLACK PHANTOM released in the first wave, and 6231 SPEEDA DEMON in the second. Parts from Toxic Reapa, Jawblade, and Splitface can be combined to form a model that represents the unnamed mutated industrial robot villain. Erroneously, the model used three bulky black armor pieces from Toxic Reapa when Toxic Reapa has only two, and Splitface has a gunmetal gray version of the piece. It is unknown why Black Phantom, Thornraxx, XT4, Core Hunter, Speeda Demon, and Voltix never had their own combination models.

The release trend was continued in 2013, featuring seven Makuhero Planet creatures controlled by Brains, Hero Factory's 2013 story arc's main villains. Each set included a Brain piece: small bagged villains included 44003 SCAROX in the first wave, and 44013 AQUAGON in the second. Medium-sized bagged villains included 44001 PYROX, 44005 BRUIZER, and 44007 OGRUM in the first wave, and 44011 FROST BEAST in the second. The last villain, 44009 DRAGON BOLT, came packaged in a large bag rather than a box, and was released in the second wave.

There are no villain sets in 2014, though there is set 40117 HF Villains Minimodel, but the Jumpers are not really villain by nature.

Trivia

  • The Brains' creator was voiced by Tom Kenny in Episode 10: Brain Attack. In Episode 9: Breakout Part 2, the villain who was laughing when the Hero Factory's schematics was transferred in a laptop is probably him because of the similar laughter, and this villain was uncredited in the episode.
  • Makuro-X1 never appeared in any Hero Factory media other than the March-April 2011 Lego BrickMaster Magazine.
  • The unnamed mutated industrial villain never appeared in any Hero Factory media other than the May-June 2012 Lego Magazine, neither did his Hero foe.
  • The villains that are released in the sets and shown in the Television Episodes and the Secret Mission chapter books seem to be completely robotic and are called robots. However, Toxic Reapa is known to be from a species of deadly insect-like beings, and younger versions of them are contained in cocoons that they hatch from, though these cocoons have metal pipes attached to them.[Episode 8][Episode 9] Splitface's body is said to have "a mechanical half and a mutated organic half."[FO:MSG] Thornraxx has a species, and he can spew gunk when he gets thrown to somewhere and gets hit by it very hard.[SM2][FO:MSG] Also, there is the "mutated" industrial robotic villain. The Brains are organic.
